Hatha Yoga

What Is Hatha Yoga?

Hatha Yoga is one of the most accessible and foundational forms of yoga, and yet, its depth and potential for transformation are truly profound.

The word “Hatha” is derived from two Sanskrit syllables:

  • Ha, meaning Sun (Surya)
  • Tha, meaning Moon (Chandra)

These represent opposing yet complementary forces—masculine/feminine, active/passive, light/dark. The goal of Hatha Yoga is to balance these dualities within us, harmonizing body and mind, effort and ease, the seen and unseen.

The word “Yoga” itself comes from the root yuj, meaning to yoke, unite, or join. In Hatha Yoga, we unite the fragmented aspects of ourselves, physical, mental, energetic, and spiritual, into a centered, whole presence. It is the path of integration and alignment with the Cosmic Self.

The Alchemy of Practice

Hatha Yoga isn’t just movement, it’s a deeply alchemical process. Through consistent practice, we burn away the dense and impure elements of the body-mind system, allowing our true nature to emerge.

This purification is especially linked to the third chakra (Manipura), the seat of our will and inner fire. From here, transformation begins. We experience the unity of body, mind, and spirit, down to the very atoms, cells, and tissues.

Practices in Hatha Yoga may include:

  • Asanas (yoga postures) – to develop strength, flexibility, and awareness
  • Pranayama (breathwork) – to purify and regulate energy
  • Mudras (gestures) – to activate energy channels
  • Mantras – to focus the mind and open the heart
  • Meditation – to merge with stillness and bliss

One deeply enriching practice is Pratyahara, often misunderstood but profoundly impactful. It means withdrawing from external distractions so we can turn inward.

Michelle’s personal experience with Pratyahara has brought extraordinary spiritual insight and lasting peace. These tools aren’t just techniques—they’re invitations to experience the sacred within.
